Arthur Harold Gifford was one of seven ex-Rapaura School students to serve in WWI. One of the classrooms is now called the Gifford Room, with the other classrooms named after soldiers Coleman, O’Dwyer, Bassett, Pigou, Soper and Jellyman.

Rapaura’s nod to past pupils Continued from page 1 The names were unveiled at the school’s assembly on Friday afternoon. Arthur, who was commonly called Harold, was one of seven siblings, and worked as a farmer before he was deployed. A private, he fought in the Battle of the Somme before being killed in action on April 23, 1918. Georgie says she knew little about her great-great uncle before starting the project. “It’s pretty cool. It was good to research and learn about him.” A class of senior students, including Georgie, Aaron Henderson, Amber Halton and Ashley Marfell, decided to investigate Rapaura School’s war veterans as part of their inquiry topic, and to mark 100 years of the Gallipoli landings.

While the whole class researched the topic, Georgie and Ashley created signs for each classroom, while Aaron and Amber created a website with text, photos and
videos about each soldier. Aaron says he and Amber had to learn how to put a website together as part of the project. The project took about seven weeks to
complete. Principal Michelle Spencer says she is proud of the ownership the students took over their work. “I guess it shows the importance of including student voice in learning. That’s how learning needs to be these days. “They’ve identified the significance of war heroes and family links, and the importance of the symbolism with the 100-year celebrations.” The other veterans’ full names are Albert John Coleman, James O’Dwyer, Ernest John Bassett, Arthur Comyn Pigou, Norman Soper and Norman William Jellyman. An eighth soldier, Merve Robinson, served in WWII, and is also commemorated on the website. The information can be seen at rapaurawarheroes.weebly.com.

Keane will see out his seventh and final season with the Makos in the ITM Championship later this year before making the move. Lewis would not confirm who was likely to take over at the helm of the Makos, with assistant coach Leon MacDonald likely to be in the mix. Keane will look to go one better in his last season at the helm of the Makos who were beaten premiership finalists in 2014, losing to Taranaki.

Ex-postie frustrated with lack of mail delivery info
By Jacob Page A former rural postie is calling for New Zealand Post to be more open with planned changes to mail delivery which are due to take effect in July. Blenheim woman, Chris Maxwell received a letter from one of the magazines she subscribes to outlining how the reduction in mail delivery will affect her getting the magazine. The letter states the magazine publisher had been informed by New Zealand Post “priority mail (like Fast Post) will be delivered every day”. “New Zealand Post has indicated that, from July, the days your address is due to receive standard mail is Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.” While the move to three day-a-week deliveries had been announced several months ago, Chris says more specific information should be readily available.
“People need to know what’s going on, not only so they know when to collect mail, but when to send mail so that it gets to where it’s needed on time.” Chris used to be a rural deliverer in the Bay of Islands and says she knows of plenty of horror stories of late mail or mail simply “vanishing”. “I don’t think the service they are providing at the moment is a good one and that seems unlikely to change. “Just how are they going to ensure all Fast Post mail gets delivered each day? Will they be contracted out or what? It raises many possibilities.” Chris says for a town like Blenheim where many elderly do not use the internet, merely having information on a website is not good enough. A New Zealand Post spokesperson confirmed fast post would still operate

The Marlborough Primary Health Organisation says Blenheim medical practices Lister Court Medical and Francis Street Medical would not be extending free doctor’s visits to under 13s when the Government changes begin today. The Marlborough After-Hours GP service had also chosen not to opt in to the scheme. Every medical practice has the choice whether they opt in.

The Taxpayers’ Union executive director Jordan Williams says his organisation is alarmed with the Marlborough District Council’s decision to underwrite a $3.1 million loan to the Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust because of its inability to fundraise enough money to finish the ASB Civic Theatre. “The Trust seems to have got into difficulty because they didn’t receive a $3.1 million lottery grant. Building half a theatre on the wish and prayer of receiving a discretionary grant to finish the job is gobsmacking. “The council has allowed ratepayers to be put over a barrel by the trust. Had the council not extended the guarantee, the initial ratepayer contribution of $5 million was in jeopardy. Why did the council allow the

Dear Ed, Re: Council extends loan guarantee after theatre funding falls through - Marlborough Express. Oh here we go again. More money for the theatre. Yes I am being negative but it’s all we hear about the concrete monster that shadows the Clubs of Marlborough and Blenheim School. It’s also a concern that the council was trying to
hide it from us. What else are they hiding? Perhaps in 20 years’ time when Marlborough has recovered from the financial hit that this ridiculous and unnecessary project has inflicted, we may start to see the positive in it. Until then I will continue to brace myself for more secret handouts that my rates will undoubtedly be paying for.

By Adam Poulopoulos The first group of students completing an introductory business course also offering free childcare have graduated. Rose Burdon, Nikki Brown, Kathy Smith and Azusa Takase were acknowledged at an informal ceremony at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology on Friday morning. They have completed the ‘Mums/Dads and Bubs’ course, a joint initiative between NMIT and the nearby Beavertown Early Learning Centre. Students undertake a 12-month business administration course, while the early learning centre offers free childcare for their young children. The class meets once a week and students learn skills like using Microsoft Office, customer service, accounting and how to use office equipment. Lecturer Bron Mogridge says she is delighted with the progress the students have made. “I have seen people that were shy come out of themselves and
become a lot more confident. That is the main thing.” She says the camaraderie the class has developed has been another highlight.

The group has been touring New Zealand for the past three weeks and gigged in Nelson and Picton last week, after playing throughout the North Island. They were driving down to Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown before heading back to France. The group has also been recording footage for a new music video and chose Yealands as a venue to shoot some of their material. On an otherwise quiet Friday afternoon their music provided a much appreciated interlude for the winery staff. The group flies home to France today. Family matters For many couples, first comes the wedding and first home purchase, then comes a baby. Or so they say. Sadly this is not the case for all couples who find themselves facing the reality of not being able to conceive. Blenheim woman Sarah Assandri talks to reporter Celeste Lodewyk about twice surviving cancer, having her ovaries removed and now going through the process of finding an egg donor in the hope of raising the awareness of the need for donors nationwide. Sarah was born with bilateral retinoblastoma, a childhood cancer which her mother discovered. “I was six weeks old when my mum found it. She could see straight to the back of my eye,” she says. Surgeons revealed that one of her eyes had to be removed immediately. A tumour was found in the remaining eye so a piece of radioactive plaque was stitched to the tumour which crystalised it and saved the eye. The cancer blow came again at age 21 when she started getting cysts on her ovaries. After numerous operations and biopsies it was found her ovaries were cancerous. Surgeons removed her right ovary, then announced they wanted to take the left. “I was afraid I would lose the chance to get pregnant so I held the remaining ovary hostage for a while,” she jokes. “I asked him to give me IVF so I could keep some eggs for when I did want to start a family. “I went through a series of injections to stimulate my ovary, but the problem was that by stimulating it, it was making the cancer more fierce. “That was what I was up against, but in the end it was successful and I had six eggs taken and stored,” she says. Sarah went on to marry the love of her life, Gustavo Assandri in 2013 after a fairytale romance and the happy couple started making plans to have a baby. For this to happen Sarah needed to have her six eggs that had been frozen in storage fertilised. Unfortunately she received the call earlier this year to say none had survived. She is now going through the process of finding an egg donor outside of
Marlborough. “That was devastating news, hearing that my eggs had failed. That was my last biological hope of conceiving. “Having a family is important to me so we started looking into egg donation. “I was surprised to find out that New Zealand does not have an egg bank. NZ is really lacking and I think many women have no idea of the need for egg donors,” she says. As part of their ‘journey’ Sarah created a Facebook Page titled ‘Egg donor NZ needed - Lil noodle’ where she has openly talked about her search for an egg donor. She has also included information and links to websites where people can find out more about egg donation. “Normally it isn’t something I would do so publicly but I really want to raise the awareness that there is a need for egg donors. “People who have seen my page have messaged me saying; “We didn’t realise... we would love to be donors. “I have also had some beautiful friends offer which is lovely of them, but ideally we are looking for donors out of the region. It has to be a situation that is right for both parties. “But even if people aren’t interested in becoming donors, at least pass the information on and spread the message. If we don’t create attention for it, no one knows they can help,” she says. For now, Sarah and Gustavo have two donors they are interested in and are currently in a waiting pattern while all the relevant checks and procedures take place. “We are ready to start the next stage of our lives and have so much love to give a child. It would make us complete,” she smiles.

See the Stripper that gets it off, every time! By Dave Hare, Coopers was started by Simon Cooper in the early 80’s. At that time, Simon was a cabinet maker with a boutique shop in Wellington making and restoring fine furniture. Disillusioned with the standard of current paint strippers and with a flair for chemistry, Simon set about making a stripper that was easy to use and actually worked. I asked him what on earth possessed him to try and change the norm. “I was sick of how difficult it was to use the current strippers, and knew sanding was a complete waste of time,” Simon says. “Why sand when the person who made the item sanded it in the first place? I was determined to make a product that was easy to use and made sanding obsolete.” Simon is Kiwi-born and bred and as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age to work things out, rather than to accept things as they are. At high school he developed a passion for working with wood and his love of fine furniture began. Once Simon developed his own stripper, the word got out and today, over 30 years later, Simon’s products and methods are now known as Cooper’s Strip Club; a complete DIY restoration system, family owned and operated, available throughout New Zealand and Australia.

Simon says Cooper’s is different to conventional strippers in so many ways. The main ones being that it will strip any finish from any surface, without the need for sanding, whether the finish is on the inside or outside of your home. “I am very proud of it and the results it has achieved,” he says. With Cooper’s having been used on well over 70,000 homes, Simon says anyone can easily strip anything covered in paint or varnish such as furniture, doors and mouldings, or even weatherboards and windows baked by the sun for over 100 years. I also asked Simon about the current problems related to safe lead removal. Simon says.
“Because there is no lead dust created through sanding, or lead vapour generated by heat guns, lead poisoning is no longer a concern” Simon and wife Dorri with sons Lance and George will be at the Marlborough Home & Garden Show this weekend showing the public just how easy stripping can be. “If you have a project in mind, come and check out how easy stripping can be.” I say, it sounds like it strips it all then! “I wouldn’t have made it if it didn’t,” Simon says with a smile.
Windows, the perfect DIY project
By Andrew Siddall When it comes to stripping your windows, it’s normal to be confronted by the scope of the project, and the windows that won’t open or close properly because of the many coats of paint that have glued them shut. The tricky corners with all that built-up paint that seems impossible to strip and of course the lead paint that we grind into dust with sandpaper to spread around for everyone to leave; it’s all very daunting. Well not anymore, Simon Cooper from the Cooper’s Strip Club, says. Simon says their stripping system makes stripping your windows the perfect DIY project. Simon confidently claims their easy-to-use products and methods will remove any paint or varnish from the inside or outside of your windows without the need to use sandpaper. Simon says their stripper will dissolve any finish
and their flusher will rinse the surface clean and because the process is wet, there is no harmful lead dust to worry about. By Adam Poulopoulos Mayfield Kindergarten has some new guardians in the form of Maori pou whenua, or land posts, unveiled earlier this week. The three carvings, which sit outside the kindergarten’s front gate, were shown to the public for the first time at a blessing ceremony on Monday morning. The unveiling was timed to coincide with Matariki, or Maori New Year. The pou whenua are Rongomatane, which guards cultivated foods and peace at the kindergarten, Tangaroa, which looks after the waterways and Tane Mahuta, which protects the forest and the creatures in it. They were carved by local artist Paora Mackie after consultation with parents, staff and children in the kindergarten community. Marlborough Kindergarten Association bicultural facilitator and Mayfield Kindergarten teacher Roxy Jones oversaw the project. She says the children have reacted well to the carvings. “They have been made as a hands-on resource, so children can touch and hug them, which makes them even more meaningful.”

nails, scrap metal and other sharp objects that were up there. He says people need to be aware of how clogged gutters can get and how it can cause bigger issues if they are not checked regularly.

Chip on his shoulder By Adam Poulopoulos Kaharoa Bradley loves golf, and he has all the gear to keep on improving. The 11-year-old Bohally Intermediate School pupil placed fourth in the under-11 girls/boys age group, and first in his playing group, at the annual Tasman Junior Tiger tournament in Nelson in March. The Year 7 student is aiming to better his score at next year’s tournament, and has the set-up to do it. He has a chipping net and a driving net in his backyard and after dark he practices putting into a cup. He has also been known to play two rounds of golf back-to-back on two different courses during the summer. Kaharoa says he started playing as an eight-year-old in February 2012.

“My mum and dad took me to the mini-golf in Picton and I started there.” Kaharoa’s mother Katie-Anna Phillips says she noticed his natural hand-eye coordination when he first started playing. “He wasn’t interested, and then he had a go. Then he picked up a club and that was it. “Now it’s all he talks about.” Kaharoa has junior golf training at Marlborough Golf Club on Wednesdays and Fridays. As well as golf, Kaharoa plays rugby for Central, as a prop. He says Rory McIlroy and Lydia Ko are his golfing idols.

Paddon sticks to plan for WRC Poland sprint By Jacob Page Kiwi rally duo Hayden Paddon and Blenheim-based John Kennard head to Poland looking at to build on the breakthrough second place in the Rally of Italy. It’s their sixth World Rally Championship event of 2015, and they are looking forward to the fast roads and staying focused on his game plan of a top five finish. “At the start of the year we set our target for this event to finish in the top five and that remains the same,” says Paddon from Finland where he’s been testing with Hyundai Motorsport for the event following Poland. “Yes, our good result in Sardinia gives us more confidence and people maybe expect more from us now, but we won’t get carried away. For John [Kennard, Paddon’s co-driver] and me, our

Hazelwood backs up to go back-to-back Margaret Hazelwood retained her six-kilometre title at the Marlborough Harrier Club Cross Country Champs at Okaramio on Saturday. Hazelwood was first across the line in the veteran women grade, finishing the course in 35

The Marlborogh Development team lost 3-1 to Nelson Suburbs on Saturday, a result which leaves them five points off the top of the table. Central Pirates returned to the top of the Marlborough senior division one football table after beating Rangers Hammers 7-1 while BV Development fell to a 2-0 defeat against Biddy Kate’s Rangers.
